Today we’re going to talk about parties and home decor. Stop worrying about your costume for a second. Organizing a party is way harder: you need to plan many things like food, drinks, invitations, and decorations. Ok, now breathe. You can make this party happen, and on a budget too! Once you’ll have chosen your Halloween party theme, you can follow the vibe and go for a matching outfit.

Choose a theme

You can totally choose a theme if you like, but you can also just stick to the general “Halloween theme”. There’s already so much juice in it that you have plenty of ideas, inspiration and decor to choose from! If you want to go for a particular theme though, I made you a small list of possible choices:

1. Asylum. It never goes out of fashion. If you’re a medical fetish fan, this is a must! And I recommend you watch some American Horror Story: Asylum to get some inspiration! You can distribute surgical masks at guests arrival, and give free fake blood and bandages to everyone. With this theme, coming up with food ideas will be a breeze, too. Think syringes filled with Campari (no needles, you maniac!), pills shaped candies and all kind of drinks in syrup bottles.

2. Hotel. Since we’re talking AHS here, you could totally go for the haunted hotel theme. There must be a Room 64 of course, and you can dress up as the blood lusting Countess, a perfect costume for the party host! Below, some props that are perfect for the asylum and the hotel theme. Hell, the window cling makes me shiver even behind a screen.

3. Cemetery. You can make this one really creepy. Download plenty of old black and white vintage pictures from the internet and stick them on fake tombstones. The creepier the faces, the better! Stick crosses everywhere and use those leaves I talk about in the Party Props paragraph below.

4. Dollhouse. Creepy as hell! You will need lots of old dolls to cut them up, apply creepy make up, splatter with blood. You can also slightly change the setting and make it a voodoo ritual place. Get inspired by Mexico scary Island of Dolls for this one.

5. Crazy circus. That’s one of my favourite! Nothing creeps me out like an evil clown or a maleficent lion tamer! Watch Rob Zombie’s movies to get inspiration on this theme. And go buy tons of striped fabric, cause you’ve got some serious decorations to make! PS: I don’t want to sound boring, but American Horror Story has a circus themed series, too. It’s AHS:Freak Show. I didn’t like it, in fact, I didn’t even watch the whole series, but there are cool things happenings especially if we’re talking props and scenery.

You can get more specific and create truly horrific themes like zombie Nazis, or historical themes like vampire 1930s swing dancers. If your friends are tv series addicted like mine, there’s plenty to choose from. Hannibal, Bates Motel, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, Penny Dreadful, Orange is the new Black, Pretty Little Liars (appropriated if there are many girlfriends in your group). Or you could come up with a funny theme like dead rock star themed party! Everyone has a favourite dead rockstar he/she always wanted to impersonate! Or horror Care Bears, dead Winx, killer Barbies and so on. Be creative!

Extra tip: put a horror movie on but leave the TV on mute. Have a bunch ready because hopefully your party will  go on longer than 2 hours.

Party props

If you live in the US or in the UK, that’s pretty easy. Every supermarket, shop, 99 Pounds and whatnot has a huge Halloween section! If you live outside those countries (like I do) you’ll need to get creative; even if Halloween has become increasingly popular over the last few years it’s not that easy finding a lot of stuff on the cheap. But trust me, you can find Halloween props everywhere if you put your mind to it!

1. Leaves. Yeah, right. We’re in Fall so there’s plenty of leaves flying around and laying in parks! Pick the yellow and orange ones up and carry them home. They will make an awesome leaves carpet or buffet table decoration!

2. Styrofoam and spray cans. Exactly. You can make absolutely anything with the help of these two guys. Think crosses, tombstones, and coffins! It’s going to be much less expensive if you make these things on your own instead of buying them.

3. Fake spiderweb. This is a must. It can turn even a new shiny washing machine into a Halloween prop. Go for it! You can usually infest your whole house with just a couple of packs! Can’t find it? Use cotton wool. It works just as fine.

Creepy food

Ok, there’s no such thing like creepy food, but you can make any food look creepy! For this one I highly suggest you use Pinterest. I have recently started enjoying cooking a lot, but I have yet to try some Halloween food. I remember making candy apples and chocolate bananas once, but that’s pretty much it! Here are some nice ideas I have found for you though:

1. Use wurstels like there’s no tomorrow. They’re creepy even in our everyday meals, and they look like human fingers. I don’t eat meat, but there are plenty of options for vegetarians these days. Chances are your non-vegetarian guests won’t even notice. Extra tip: sprinkle them with a lot of ketchup!

2. Use emptied pumpkins as bowls. They’re not so expensive and they will sure be more impressive than your plastic Ikea bowls!

3. Gummy worms. Buy a ton and make vodka gummy worms. Bears are just not yucky enough. Come on, you all know how to make these. Drown them in vodka and leave them soak for one night. Put them into the fridge and serve chilled! (Heads up for vegans reading this: watch out for the ingredients. Gummy candies are mostly made with animal-derived gelatin).

Aaaand it’s a pinnable! Mouse over the image and click on the red button to pin it.

I’d love to, but this year is full of Halloween parties hosted b big names around my area. Not bad at all I guess. However, these ideas would also rock for my next birthday. I think it could be so epic! 🙂

Awesome! I like the idea of having a theme for the decor instead of just general creepiness. I’ve already decorated my friend’s place and will be dressed up hanging out there watching The Nightmare Before Christmas and handing out candy on Halloween. I have been on the lookout for some creepy Halloween party food to make that’s a little on the healthier side. Since I know you guys are about cruelty-free here, I recently wrote a post on ethical Halloween candy if you want to check it out, you can here:

Hi Grace, thank you! I love organizing parties, unfortunately I couldn’t throw one for this Halloween! It makes me sooo sad T_T Thank you for your suggestions about ethical candies. I love that you even thought about the issue! It shows that you really care 🙂 Btw, if there was an Halloween tradition in my country I would go the DIY way. I love baking so I’d probably make treats by myself. I did in the past for an Halloween party and it was a lot of fun! But unfortunately we don’t have kids knocking at your door that much here. It happens, but not so often ;D (I live in Italy)
